Speed Guitar
70Getting lightning fast on guitar is easier than you think.
In this article you will learn
- Exactly how to become a lightning fast guitar player.
- Practice techniques that will astonish you.
- The left and right brain of the guitar player.
I am assuming you have some basic skills on the guitar. But, no matter what your level, you will get much better by using these secrets.
An Amazing Blur
Speed is important when you play guitar. It is like volume or strength. You need a lot of it so you can back off and NOT use it all.
To become a fast guitar player you will need to practice NOT making mistakes.
That means you will practice slowly. This is a phenomenal technique and will give you amazing results.
One of the enemies of playing guitar with lightning speed is your own attention span. If you are impatient for fast results you will tend to skim over the part you are practicing and do a sloppy job of learning it.
Here 's how to correct this mistake-
Understand the guitar part you are practicing.
- Play it slow.
- Isolate the notes.
- Play it slower.
Slow Down Cowboy
The goal here is not speed…yet. The goal is to learn this riff or part correctly.
DO NOT PRACTICE MISTAKES. Your subconscious mind will perform the mistakes right on schedule! If you don't have the mistakes in your head, they won't show up in a performance.
Super Secret Trick-As you practice your part slowly, stop and learn it at three different places on the neck. Learn it in the correct key on three different places. This is a fantastic trick and will increase your ability exponentially.
I want to be sure you understand this. For example- play a three fingered C chord in the beginners position at the first through third frets. That's basic C. Now go up to the eight fret and play a C. ( consult chord chart for beginners. ) Now use your chord chart to find a third place to play C. Practice all three.
Every time you learn a new riff, or chord pattern, take the extra few minutes to
- learn it in three different places on the guitar neck.
- Slow way down and learn all your parts correctly.
- Speed is not the goal at all here. The goal is correctness.
Where Was I...Oh....
Now back to attention span.
Take
a full week or more to gain speed. You will be astonished what you can
do when you have learned the part correctly, and slowly.
Your hand- mind connection takes time and repetition to learn. You must slow down and be patient to make this work.
Your
attention span is vital with this practice. This exercise is similar to
meditation with a focus only on playing the part correctly first, then
faster as the days go by.
When you reach a place where you are playing faster but making mistakes, that's your cue to slow down.
Relax
It
is crucial that you take a break and walk away from this exercise when
you begin to feel fatique. Any sign of that and you will be practicing
mistakes. They will then show up (just as you practiced them) on stage.
Speed guitar is amazing.
You can get so fast that when you stop to think about it, you trip up and make mistakes.
This is because stopping to think about it turns it over to the left brain. The rational, analytical side of your brain takes things in a linear way.Like counting.
But Speed Guitar is done using the hand-
mind connection and the right side of your brain. Once you learn it on
the left side, you then hand it over to the right brain and it can
handle all the speed your hands can give it.
You will be amazed.
Give it time. Remember.
- Left brain for learning slowly.
- Right brain for taking it all at once.
With the right balance of patience and practice you will be a flash , whether you are playing bluegrass, rock or blues guitar.
